Imran is sexy. He is available, but taking anything from him is illegal and could land you in prison or, at the very least, with an extraordinarily large tax bill. Imran is a Genie and Primrose a government employee, and in a world where magic is heavily governed to ensure equality for all, their relationship appears doomed from the start. When Primrose finds herself the unwilling mistress of a hot male Genie, her stifling suburban lifestyle is shattered. Thrust into the steamy Free Zone, filled with lascivious Satyrs and treacherous Sirens, Primrose discovers that three wishes can give her anything she needs, but can they give what she truly wants?

Magical Gains Nicola E Sheridan Carolyn Crow Dawn Dominique 9781615723096 Books

In an alternative version of reality Primrose works for the government monitoring magical beings magical output. One day when she buys an old lamp for her small but well put together house she accidently aquires a genie. This is bad news as he is unregistered and extremely attractive. Add to this a borish fiance who has abusive tendancies and you have a great paranormal romance. I particularly like the inclusion in this book of lesser known magical beings such as manticores, sirens and harpies and not to mention the insatiable satyrs. A well written book that begs for a sequel!

Be careful what you wish for a common warning given to the nascent by the wise, and the reason that always follows the advice is `because you just might get it.' But inexorably, someone doesn't listen. Nicola E. Sheridan's Magical Gains is the granted wish of an entire generation of readers bored with the same old supernatural tale plotted, produced, and packaged, but few of those starving many will be prepared for what Sheridan has cooked up. In her novel, magical beings are not only real, but people know about them. Not only that, they're even exploited like a superior minority would be. Bound by this complexly involved and creatively realized premise is a love story that has all the trappings of romance, not just the easily won, happy bits, but also the uneasy, awkward portions as well. Sheridan does not hesitate to paint her pictures realistically with gripping detail and courageous diction. You will understand her heroine, Primrose, and empathize with the nettling decisions forced upon her by Imran the genie. You'll understand her laughter and internalize her tears. Hidden beneath the work's smooth skin and supple curves are all the common and necessary things that make people human, and that is precisely what makes Sheridan's Magical Gains worthy of acquiring.
It was a little strange reading about parts of my own city, but man did she do it justice! The alternate universe she has created is similar yet different. Magical Gains Tax is applied to anything magical, and when Primrose becomes the unwilling owner of a genie lamp and it's sexy occupant, she is perturbed to say the least.
Primrose is a little shy and unassuming. She has some serious self confidence issue thanks to her overbearing ex. I did find her character a little weak, but I was always rooting for her. She had this naivety about her, and she somehow keeps it through the whole story even though she grows and gets a little tougher by the end. She also seemed very real. There are a few moments in the book that had me cringing, and thinking that it was something I'd do, or thats what would have happened to me.
Imran is way yummy, and tries so hard to help Primrose. In the beginning he is out for himself, but then he sees how her fiancée treated her, and realises that he can help her. I loved Imran from the get go. I definitely wouldn't mind finding him in a bottle. He always made such an effort to help bring Primrose out of her shell and help her realise what a beautiful person she was. Inside and out.
Magical Gains is a different paranormal romance, a nice change from the usual. I really enjoyed the story, and thought the idea of a tax on magical creatures and the like a great idea. It make's you think how would all us normal people react the having the extraordinary 'come out', so to speak. Magical Gains get really interesting when they end up in a Free Zone, where magic isn't policed. Primrose finds herself in a spot of bother with some Satyrs. Then we meet Imran's brother and find out about their dark past.
If you're looking for something inventive and new in the PNR genre then give Magical Gains a go. It's a fresh, funny, fantastic read with a healthy dose of sexy thrown in. I can't wait for the second book in the series, Magical Creations.
I received this book as an ARC.

I absolutely love Nicola E. Sheridan's writing. This is the second book of hers that I have read and I just cannot put them down once I start. I think I might be in love with genie books because of her now. Magical Gains is the precursor to Magical Creations (which you can see my review for at [...] and a character interview with Lugh who is ALSO in this book at [...]). You do not have to read them in order though in order to enjoy both stories.

This story is about Primrose Brasco who works for the Australian government in the Magical Culture department. She is engaged to a rugby player and also government employee named Ian Beckwith. Both of them are completely human which I am thinking is pretty much a requirement for the Australian government. In this world, Genies are pretty much coveted and hidden. All magical creatures have to register with the government in order for their powers not to be abused and unbalance the economy. No one is allowed to gain fame and fortune via magical means without having to pay a magical gains tax (hence the name of the story). Abdul Imran, the genie of the story is unregistered. He tries very hard not to register because he does not want to be passed along to anyone whom he does not deem worthy. He also could be imprisoned for some of the wishes he has granted in the past. That said, Imran sees Primrose as she passes the antiquities shop that his lamp is being sold at. He instantly is infatuated with her and uses him magic to entice her to come into the store to buy his lamp. Apparently he is normally better at researching the person he wishes to be his master because he was completely unaware that Primrose worked for the government and therefore is completely unable to accept his wishes. He also didn't pay attention to the diamond ring on her hand, which you can guess is a problem for a genie who normally has very close relationships with his mistresses.

Their genie/mistress relationship is strained by Imran's intense desire to be with Primrose and Ian being an abusive and ungrateful fiance. It takes a few months for Primrose to realize that she cannot tolerate Ian any longer. Imran's influence has only the effect of helping Primrose to feel more wanted and show her that she deserves better. Unfortunately, Imran also "helps" his mistress to get away from Ian by magical means and then to flee the country when the government figure outs that she is harboring an unregistered magical being. Things go crazy as everyone Primrose runs into thinks that she is a lady of "virtue" and wants to remove that virtue while Imran goes in search of his lamp. A rogue magician has claimed his lamp and intends to drain him of all his energy, but he must also find Primrose and force her into making her wishes. It get pretty hectic, but you will be engrossed right away and thrilled with the ending! I am looking forward to my next Nicola E. Sheridan read.

Have to agree that the world in which this takes place is imaginative but somehow I just didn't get involved with the characters and their romance.Hence only 3 stars
